When dealing with spyware, it also helps to do this first:

- Click Start | Run, type msconfig, Press Enter.

- Click the Startup Tab and click Disable All.

- Click Services, check Hide All Microsoft Services. Click Disable All.

- Apply, Ok, Restart.

Most adware is downloaded by a Trojan that gets on your computer first. Trojans are designed to look like legit software until it starts doing its job.

Adware is a good free program that specializes in adware removal.
