I have a Toshiba A50 laptop. I have a system problem in my computer. when I was running an adware remover program the computer got stuck and when I tried to restart the computer, the computer starts and goes to the windows welcome screen(windows xp) and then the computer screen goes blank (or black)

My friend advice me to do a windows XP repair. I have the Toshiba product Recovery CD, which I got when I purchased the laptop.

I booted my computer from this product recovery CD. It gave me 3 optons as below

It sounds like you're in a bit of fix there, Julie.

As an earlier respondent states, it may well be you have a virus or some malware infecting your system.

I've just been to the Packard Bell website, and located drivers etc. for your particular computer. Unfortunately, you can't install the drivers directly from the site. You have to download them onto your computer and then decompress them before you can install them.

How much RAM do you have - and can you add more? Run a checkup by Crucial to check that. Then run a complete computer check by Belarc Advisor to tell you EVERY thing on your computer. There may be old programs, games, ISP's, other things like that, that you've forgotten. Remove everything that isn't necessary, or that you don't use. Offload it onto to CD's or DVD's if you have the burners to do that. Free up disk space, then defrag.

You can't do too much more. One thing you could do is stop a bunch of programs from uselessly running at startup and thus eating up your resources for no reason, and slowing down startup time.

Superantispyware, Spybot S%26D are both reliable.
I use spyhunter and so far none of the really nasty and sticky malware (Zlog, wild tangent) I got rid of with it have come back.

By the way, some of these programs only go away when you run the spy remover in safe mode and as admin.

my antivirus is being pelted with dozens of trojan, adware, spyware crap from this folder/program NetProject. c/program files/netproject. I have had the same problem. Make sure your Norton or whatever including Spybot or a similiar mal-ware program is up to date, do a system scan AFTER you turn off your system restore. Run them, and they may find or not find something. Then reboot, hit F8 and go into safe mode. Look in your Programs File for a folder call Net Project and delete it. Reboot machine. Now this may not work for everyone on the list because there are various forms of this bug. But that is what I had and did. Stan

Go to www.download.com and get Spyware Doctor Starter Edition which is totally free and the best malware remover, period. Install, update, take your pc off the internet and perform a full/complete scan. Still having pop-ups? Scan your pc in safe mode (F8 @ startup). Still having pop-ups? Go online to Trend Micro Housecall to perform a free online malware/virus scan and removal. This should remedy your problems.

Also if you don't have a good antivirus program I recommend Antivir Classic, which is totally free and has great detection. It is available on www.download.com, but you will need to remove your current antivirus program before installing this one.

I doubt that its windows telling you there's spyware. The thing that is telling you there is spyware/adware etc is the adware itself. Windows doesn't come with antispyware preloaded.

I would suggest you to use Spybot SD. Two reasons - its really good, and its free.

I recently found out that I had a Trojan on my computer (PSW BiSpy) and I have been working for the past 3 days trying to get rid of it. 1. Unplug your PC from the network. The Trojan may be sending your info to another PC over the Internet.

2. copy any files you want to keep to a flash or USB drive. IF you can't get to this point, consider your files lost and go to step 3.

3. Do a complete (destructive) re-installation of the operating system. You may have a recovery partition on your PC which you can get to by pressing F10 or F1 early in the boot up, or you will need a recovery disk.

4. Install anti virus and anti spyware before you re-install applications or restore data.

After completing all steps, if you still need help, please send a new question. You may have a problem trying to run steps in safe mode on user accounts that have limited priviledges. This will only be on Windows 2K, XP, %26 2003 systems. Limited user accounts will not show when you boot into safe mode. You have two options, run the steps in normal boot mode which may not work to remove malware, or you can temporarily change the user account to an admin account and then complete the steps.

CPU Usage Problem?

I have run several virus checkers and adware removers on my system. I have also "cleaned disk" and defragmented by hard drive. I am currently running a 200hz machine with 512k of memory. However, as of lately, I'm hitting 100% cpu usage. In using the resource manager, it shows I still have ram available for use. I also have plenty of HD space available.

Would simply increasing the size of my ram (2 slots at 256k) to 512k x 2 fix my problem? Again, it's the CPU usage which is 100% maxed out, the manager still says I have ram available.

I'm currently investigating any issues with startup programs in my msconfig file. This problem has just arisen as of late.

it may just be the number of background programs you have running. IF your using ep punch in msconfig into the run command (I dont know if anyo ther versons have the same thing but you can try). here you can stop programs from starting up and eating up you processor speed/RAM

Open MS Config and see what is running. Start - Run - type: msconfig[enter]

Go to the STARTUP tab.

Go down the list and check each of these. YOu can use a website to check them out. Some can be disabled (such as an updater for an old program) where some others must run. Any which you find as problems you can easily disable by clearning the checkbox.

My recommendation is not to spend good money on a spyware remover. Rather, download Mozillas Firefox and use that instead of the vulnerable Internet Explorer. Unfortunately browser hijacks can be very difficult to clear, if you are running Windows XP then you need to turn off System Restore as there'll be backup files lurking there so it can re-install itself.

Then restart your system in safe mode and run the following from there;

To start in safe mode, press the F8 key repeatedly just after the bios screen comes up but before Windows loads.

If you're successful (and you might not be first time, just try again) then the pc will run a bit slower than usual, and the screen will be running at 800 x 600 so it'll look drastically different.

Log on as an administrator and run all your security software.

Then restart, if you've been successful then turn on System Restore and off you go.

Hello, I have an incredibly annoying problem.

Internet explorer keeps opening fifty million times when I use firefox.

I have changed my default browser to firefox and have changed the proxy server address to 0.0.0.0 to prevent any sites being reached. It previously tried to take me to some strange website called "the truth is out there". As I changed the proxy server address, it now opens a blank IE page.

I have downloaded 50 trillion adware removers and my anti virus (comodo) system has done a trillion full scans, but has revealed nothing.

My system restore also does not remove it.

I do not want to have to use my rescue disks, so is there any sort of way to fix this highly annoying problem?

I play many MMORPGS and they all keep getting minimized when IE opens randomly.

You've done everything I can think of. If you run the spyware and antivirus programs, they might be contributing to the problem. Do you have enough memory to support all of today's programs? Is your computer an HP? They are known for having problems. Good luck. If your computer is new and still under warranty, call tech support and see what they recommend.

I'm with the guy that answered first, looks a hardware problem, after the pc cools down it works again. Eventhough you have air conditioning.... check all the computer fans, specially the one over the microprocesor. If your motherboard has a fan over any chipset, check that too.
Have you installed any new programs? They can sometimes cause computer glitches. Also, you may have disabled a vital component in msconfig. Go back in and set everything to normal and see if that helps.

I tried to get on spynomore and contact them to give me a refund. Although it is quite unlikely to help you, if you are in the US, you can report this incident (as potential fraud, I suppose) to your state's Attorney General's office. Look for a consumer complaints office or, maybe, an ombudsman.

I have scanned my computer with every program including Trend Micro Anti Virus, Adware Alert SE 2007, Norton Anti Virus Co Edition, RegCure, and WindowsWash. I can not find the problem(s). Increase your page file memory, defragment your hard drive, or you may have to format your hard drive and reinstall your OS, start fresh my man, we all have to do it at LEAST once.

There are also other options, it may be your hardware, maybe your HDD is getting too old (it's happened to me, but that rarely make your comp slow). you should upgrade your ram and/or CPU.

Take apart your comp, clean it, and put it back together (IF you know how).

I can't tell you what the file is. You might get some idea by looking at what folder it is in. Or you can try opening it as a text file. However, if you didn't put it there I would recommend deleting it. It may have been placed there to be activated later by a virus, although I haven't found any information on it elsewhere.

Get yourself a couple of good spyware cleaners. I recommend Ad-Aware and Spybot Search and Destroy. Both are free. After you've downloaded and got the latest updates for both restart your computer in "safe mode". This way any spyware that may be on your computer won't be running. Do each spyware scan one at a time while in "safe mode". Also do a virus scan after that. Hopefully that should slove the problem. See the links below.

I have seen this problem many times before. The way that I have fixed this problem is by Inserting the Windows XP CD and then choosing to do a repair with the Recovery Console. You would then 'Rebuild' the "Bootcfg." This process does take a little bit of knowledge but I bet if you did some seaches on how to use the Recovery Console and how to rebuild the "Bootcg", you could figure it out and get your computer so it doesn't loop at that screen..

- ask a friend whos a pro with computers for help on how to remove it.

- look up what name your virus is, search the internet on its details and see if there are removal detials for it

- if too hard to remove, then you probably gonna need to wipe your drive clean and start again.

Pop your restore cd in that came with your computer. Do a complete reformat and everything should reset. Don't buy a copy of windows because the restore cd already has a version already on it. Including all the drivers you'll need.
I assume you have win xp? you can reboot it from a floppy or a cd emergency disk to get past the loop, then if you have one you can reformat with your recovery disk or buy an new full version of win xp around $200 but it has to be the full version not the upgrade. I had the same virus couldnt do anything. If its still a good computer its worth the $ to get the ful version and do a fresh install.

I run a small law firm and I'm in charge of IT. Over the years I've used several programs and had a lot of discussion with other IT people about this.

* Norton is good but the general opinion is that the program is large (takes up a lot of space on your hard drive) and tends to make your PC slow down, especially when scanning. In the past it actually crashed some of my PCs and failed to find viruses that other programs located.

* McAfee is the program we used until recently. This program also failed to find some viruses recently but the biggest problem I had with them is that their customer service is AWFUL. We had a simple account problem which meant that we couldn't download up-to-date virus definitions and they just couldn't (or wouldn't) handle it - they're more interested in taking your money than handling your problems. After hours on their helpline we just gave up and switched to AVG.

* AVG (www.grisoft.com) is excellent - we have only been using it a few weeks but it is fast and many of the IT people I talk to (including our ISP guys) also use it. The new version 7.5 (network edition at least) comes with an excellent firewall as well.

Yahoo web page keeps coming up with porno picturs from a German 'Dialer' and I cant get ri

I have a porno 'Dialer' invasion on the Yahoo web page everytime I open it. I have used all my programs to try to clear it, i.e. Spyware, Adware,Virus remover, Windows firewall. But it keeps over-riding an advert on the left hand side of the screen then flashes to full screen then imbeds it program into my computer which I keep deleting from everywhere I can.

What can I do to get rid of this 'dialer' and prevent any others.

Try scanning in safe mode with network.

Tap F8 when booting your computer. Choose safe mode with network.

Start in safe mode with network.

This is a tricky question. There is only one free program I know that scans, removes, and prevents and that is Windows Defender.

Spybot, and Adaware both scan and remove but the free version doesn't prevent. Spayware blaster helps prevent but does not scan. If you already have an infection try all of them plus HiJack this to remove hard to get of BHO's and good luck the best way to prevent spyware is to be careful.

can someone help me please. I know this sounds like a dumb question, but when I go to set a homepage the bit where you put in the address you want is faded as are the buttons that you click to set the page. I can't seem to select anything to change. The apply button is also faded out. At the moment the page seems to be set to some microsoft redirection page that doesn't exist. Is the threat of internet danger overblown?

If one listens to the news or looks on the internet security boards, it seems that the internet is full of bad guys trying to steal all of our information. I know that there are legitimate threats out there, and I take a lot of precautions. I have antivirus software, a firewall and adware/spyware removers. Even with all of this, I'm made to feel my PC isn't safe.

I don't doubt that there are very real threats out there. Just today my PC found a trojan horse in an exe. I know this is a security problem. However, the system worked. My AV stopped the trojan before deployed, before I ran the infected file. I had a potential problem, but it was caught before it became an actual problem.

What is the consensus out there? Am I really under attack at every turn and still vulnerable even with all my precautions? Or is the security threat a bit overblown and paranoid? I know that there are serious threats out there, I just have trouble believing that it's as pervasive as it's portrayed.

Good and free is often a non-compatible terms, as they need to invest time and money to make software better :)

Said that, NOD32 offers free trial, that would be my choice for antivirus (www.eset.com). However, Antivirus usually responds slower for Malware/spyware/adware and similar threats, so probably installing superantispyware(free edition available) or Malwarebytes anti-malware (free edition available) is a choice too. You can also try Spybot S%26D, but from my experience it updates deffinition not so much faster than antivirus software.

Welcome to the club! Please download and try Kaspersky. They have a trial version. It is not the best but it works well. You may also try Ad-aware SE and Super Antispyware in case you have more nasties that AVG almost always misses!
Get Avast! It's THE best anti-virus protection there is AND it's free! I've been using it for years and haven't ever gotten a virus. Also, my friend's computer had about 300-some viruses on it. I installed Avast and it cleaned every single one up.
